Health Care In The Philippines

<!--adsense-->

Philippine Hospital

As the famous saying said “Health is Wealth”, that’s very true. Health is the most important wealth that a human being could have. It is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. There are so many factors which can trigger a person to acquire disease and proper health care may prevent it. Most health practitioners say “prevention is better than cure”. So every health institution, along with private community organization programs, take care of the people, as well as organizing events that tackle health issues and caters for health concerns. This is common in the Philippines, especially in the urban area where health matters are neglected because of poverty.

The Philippine government through the LGU (Local Government Unit), in cooperation with private sectors, conquers the farthest places in the country to extend medical assistance and awareness to their countrymen. In order to strengthen the health care in the Philippines, leaders screened the medical practitioners, health institutions and facilities to ensure quality medical services were provided to the people. Here are some points that need to consider for a more established health care in the Philippines.

HOSPITALS

The top Philippine hospitals include the Medical Centre in Alabang, the Asia Hospital, the Makati Medical Centre, Medical City in Ortigas and St. Lukes Medical Centre in Quezon City. Most of the known hospitals are located in Metro Manila, which is the center of trade and industry in the Philippines. With highly trained medical practitioners, and advanced medical equipment, these institutions are prestigious. There are a number of hospitals to choose from, including private and public institutions which offer different level of services. Most of the public hospitals would not be equipped to the same standards as private one. However, some of the best doctors are serving in the government hospitals. For someone who considers their finances, it is advisable to go to a public hospital where consultations and other examinations are least expensive.

MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS

Doctors, nurses and other medical personnel are graduates from top universities in the country and most of them have studied in US medical schools. Additionally, there are doctors that have practiced medicine in another country before sharing their expertise to the Filipino doctors. Nurses have undergone rigid training from excellent schools and licensing before they can work in hospitals. In fact, Filipino nurses are highly in demand in the US and different countries because of the level of excellence they have.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

Philippines also have stand-by ambulances for an emergency situation. Every city and province has a hotline number to call or text which is always available in case of emergency. Such agencies are always open to any suggestions to make their service a high quality.

PHARMACIES

Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) approve numerous pharmacies that provide medicines. Most standard pharmacies are managed by professional pharmacists that have studied and trained in top medical schools in the country. Filipino pharmacists have stringent directives in relation to the sale of such drugs because of the strict guidelines in prescribing drugs. In the Philippines, medicines are affordable.

HEALTH ISSUES

  • Illegal drug use is one of the most common healthcare issues that the country is still struggling with. There are people who are addicted to prohibited drugs, the Philippine government has concentrated on this issue and although there are still some recorded incidents of drug abuse, the number of drug dependents has been gradually decreasing.

  • Increasing number of malnutrition due to poverty, lack of education and overpopulation. The government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) with the cooperation of the Department of Health (DOH), initiates different programs and projects to help its poor citizens who suffer starvation.

  • Refusal to admit. There are some hospitals, mostly private ones, which refuse to admit a patient because of money matters, or in some hospitals will not discharge patients without paying all the hospital bills. These practices often happen, but authorities take no action immediately.

We only live once. Therefore, we need to take good care of ourselves, following a healthy diet, taking vitamins, having regular exercise and adequate time of sleep are key components to live in a healthy lifestyle. We must start this discipline within ourselves before we start caring other.

What Kind Of Work Do Overseas Filipino Workers Do?

<!--adsense-->

Recently, Overseas Filipino Workers are considered as our modern hero. They made sacrifices for the welfare of their family in the Philippines. They live in a place they are not familiar with to offer their service to other people. These are some of the occupations that most Filipino Workers do abroad.

  • Domestic Helper. This is common to those Filipino whose qualification cannot pass to a skilled standard. They become a helper of a family, a nanny or assigned to different chores. With this kind of job, for some, they can be subjected to physical or mental abuse. But it’s just rare cases, as most governments are strict on employers.

  • Nurse. Staff employment rates abroad are quite high due to a shortage of skilled professionals. That’s the reason why nursing courses and nurses are in demand.

  • Seaman. Filipinos are known for their skills and hard work. We could not deny the fact that most of our men, or even women, conquer the world to gain a better future for their family. Years of work are nothing after seeing the fulfillment of their goals.

  • Hotel and Restaurant Staff. As its nature that a Filipino has a great smile, especially when facing other people and being very hospitable, those are the traits that every hotel and restaurant owners seek.

  • Factory Workers. Most of the factory workers are in Japan, Taiwan and Korea. Even they are not fluent in the country’s language, they are still striving to get the job along with the benefits.

  • Construction Workers and Laborer. The most in demand in a progressive country. They hire Filipino’s because of their determination and the quality of work done.

  • A Tutor. Filipinos are good in spoken English. Families abroad prefer a Filipino tutor. Some apply for an au-pair an exchange culture program of another country. It can be classified as work since you are compensated.

There are underlying reasons why until now there are Filipinos dreaming to work abroad. One main reason is that they want to raise the financial status of their family and the possibility to be a citizen in that particular country.

One of the great culture of being a Filipino is the “Close Family Ties” where in OFW finds it very hard to family. Although they are far apart, they are still close to one’s heart.

Guinea Pig Names: Find An Original Name

It is quite difficult to think of unique names for your lovely and cute guinea pigs. There are a lot of options you can chose from but the most fulfilling moment is not getting one from other sources but in formulating a cute original guinea pig name. It should be something you’d be delighted with because it’s so cute and adorable. Take a look at my suggestions and see what names appeal to you.

Name Your Pet After A Celebrity or Famous Person

Naming your guinea pig based on the latest trends with the names of your favorite celebrity or famous person is like you have taken them as your own. Just make sure the one you choose resembles some traits like hairstyle and personality of a particular celebrity so that you will easily recall the name.

This trend began in Australia, where Tim (Australian TV show Big Brother) named his pet after celebrities Lady Gaga, Steve Tyler, and Tim McGraw. They will surely be remembered due to the famous names and somehow resemble their celebrity counterpart.

Suggestions For Celebrity Guinea Pig Names

Geri Halliwell is a good name for guinea pigs with red hair. For guinea pigs with blonde hair, you can choose Paris Hilton and other favorite celebrities with stunning blonde hair. Another is for black hair like Michael Jackson. Guinea pigs that are artistic can be named as Michaelangelo.

The focal point is to try to get a name which can be easily recognized and resembles your guinea pig, so everyone will know what you are talking about. Having more than one name can be part of the charm of celebrity guinea pig naming.

Cute Character Names For Guinea Pigs

Character names are more appropriate when matched with the personality of your guinea pig. You could also name it after a suitable book, cartoon, movie or superhero characters. I’m sure there are names like Lightning Mcqueen and Fiona.

Names From a Phone Book

The names form the your phone book are more original than those found on the internet. After taking a look at my phonebook I’ve come up with the name Mike Taylor (Mikey for short). I’m sure you can do better than me when hunting out perfect names.

Names Based on Color

This is the most basic naming strategy, though it is limited depending on the color. Some great color names include Milo, Ninja, Cadbury, Navajo, Fuzzy, Tangarine and other more.

City, Country, Etc Names

If you’re getting tired of choosing from relatively normal names, another trend is to use cities, countries, days and months as a name. I once had a gray guinea pig called August because it was the end of winter. Some other examples include Illinois, Calgary, Jamaica, Darwin, and Paris.

Random Names

For no reasons some would prefer random names. Here is the list:

Murphy

Krabby Patty

Heidi

Felicette

Pixie

Smeg

Zippy

Guinea Pig Pair Names

Names can be more unique, especially if they come as a pair like salt and pepper but that’s too common. Sometimes names can just fit together, even they aren’t matched pairs example: Tom and Jerry, Minne Pig and Walbert, Coffee and Cream, and others depending on how you blend the two names together.

The most important thing to consider in naming your guinea pig is most likely on how it sounds to you. You need to be comfortable with the name you’ve given it so you can call your pet without a second thought, then the feeling of satisfaction and achievement is always there.

Guinea Pig Sounds: A Guide To Behavioral Patterns

Behavior is common among living species, especially humans and animals. Like all other animals, guinea pig also exhibits different behavioral patterns that a pet owner must understand. It is essential to learn about your pet’s behavior in order for you to recognize their unusual behavior, potential needs and moods that your pet is trying to communicate with you.

Guinea pigs are inquisitive and socially active in nature. Learning your pet’s behavior greatly contribute to a closer relationship with your pet. Every movement and gesture of your pet have its own meaning and interpretations. Below are guidelines that will be a great help for every guinea pig owner.

  • Vocal Communication. Guinea pigs often use noises to express themselves. Understanding these is a tool to understand their needs. Consider some of the examples below of guinea pig sounds:

      • Whistling. They often let out a high pitch squeal or whistle, this is a manifestation that your pet feels excitement probably because it’s feeding time or play time.

      • Purring. A purr sound of a guinea pig seems to be identical with a cat purr. These purrs have different meaning based on the pitch of the sound. A higher pitch is more likely a sound of annoyance while the shorter sounding, apprehensive purr may mean fear. For some, fear can be signalled by a high-pitched squeak or shriek. A deep, relaxed one means your pet is content.

      • Hissing. This sounds like chattering teeth, which means that your guinea pig is angry or may exhibit some aggressive feeling. It is often accompanied by bared teeth.

      • Chirping. A strange sound that a guinea pig may produce, and one of the strangest guinea pig sounds. Chirping noise is often made when your pet is in a trance-like state. Some guinea pig exhibits such kind of behavior when they have lost their partner. There’s an untold mystery with this behavior which is not fully understood.

  • Physical Communication. Guinea pigs can also express themselves through a non-verbal manner. Being able to interpret such behavior is necessary for better understanding of their needs. Here are some instances:

  • Signs of happiness/friendliness. If your pet is pleased with you, it will find ways to express and respond to you through varied body language. Rapid hopping up and down, which is similar to popcorn popping is a sign that your pet is happy. Rubbing noses, which guinea pig will often do with each other is a sign of being friendly. Guinea pig also exhibits licking to show a sense of being friendly.

  • Sign of anxiety/aggression. Your guinea pig is scared or uncomfortable when it shows freezing and fidgeting, or even throwing his head up in the air. The signs of being aggressive include teeth baring and hissing, hair fluffing and strutting.

  • Socializing. Guinea pigs are social creatures. They enjoy playing and interacting with each other. Therefore a lone guinea pig may have behavior problems like stress and depression. So it is best to allow them to play and interact with another guinea pig or with the pet owner.

  • Signs of stress and depression. A stressed guinea pig will show signs of irritability and more aggressive displays of behavior, such as tossing, fidgeting or teeth-baring. A depressed guinea pig, on the other hand, will become very listless and shows less energy. If these happen, it’s better to consult a veterinarian to bring back the happiness of your pet. Depression can happen in lone guinea pigs, one that has lost a friend, or when a new guinea pig is introduced. Lots of loving and treats can help.

Bus Travel Advice While In The Philippines

<!--adsense-->

“A traveler without observation is like a bird without wings” a quote by Moslih Eddin Saadi. This quote, simply reminds us that where ever we go we need to be observant of the place, and the people around because we never know what will happen along our journey.

In the Philippines, the common means of transportation for a long distance travel is with a bus. There are different types of buses, according to the passengers’ needs, namely; the luxury buses with beds or business-class seats, the air conditioned buses with TV and curtains, and the ordinary buses with and without glass in the windows. In choosing which type of bus to use, consider some of these questions.

What type of bus would I prefer? If it is a long ride then you must choose the one that makes you feel comfortable. Some people would rather ride on an ordinary bus, because they can’t put up with too much cold in an air conditioned bus. Some of them also consider their budget, so they don’t have any choice but to ride on the least expense one.

How sure I am with my safety? It is very true that accidents happen. As a passenger we need to be vigilant at all times. First, let’s take a look at the physical appearance of the bus and make a personal assessment. Will the bus survive a long trip? Does the driver or attendant look physically healthy? Another thing is the safety of the route? You can actually check travel advisories or watch the news about the weather conditions. Is it the best time to travel, or is it best waiting a day?

How about if I am traveling alone? Traveling alone is the hardest part of your journey, especially if it will take days and nights of travel. You need to get your backpack ready in case you need something along your way. Be wise enough to think of all your necessities, primarily food and drinks, sleeping stuffs, phone in case of emergency and money of course. It is advised to hide your money or other valuables in more than one place. So in the event of robbery, the thief will not get everything. This includes small pocket wallets, socks, and other places.

Traveling is great, especially when you arrive at your desired destination safe and in good condition. So take the above advice and enjoy your trip.

Help My Guinea Pig Is Not Eating

If your guinea pig is not eating then this is a sign that something is not right. The problem when a guinea pig stops eating is that they cannot tell us what is wrong with them, so it is usually a case of trial and error to discover what the problem is. The first thing to do is figure out what time the guinea pig last ate and drank. This is important, as the longer they go without food passing through the digestive system, the quicker they can deteriorate. Luckily, they can do quite well if they have not eaten for twenty four hours, but you should have intervened well before then.

If a guinea pig has eating problems for three days, and has hardly consumed anything, then their guts will likely shut down, and the outlook then is very poor. So as soon as you notice a guinea pig is not eating as normal, it is essential to find the problem as quickly as possible. It is always a good idea to hand feed and giving it something to drink.

When a guinea pig is not eating it could be down to its teeth, infection, something wrong in the guts, or it is impacted (males only). As the potential problems are many, it is important to take the animal to an exotic pet vet. Local vets are not usually the best option, although if you feel it is an emergency, then use them as the first point of call. You can always get a second opinion afterwards from a specialist.

Now if you know that the animal has not eaten for a good few hours, it is important to get some food into it. Offer it some treats to see if it will eat some. If not, try and get some fluids into it. In some cases you may need to syringe feed your guinea pig. If they take some food and water, then they will likely feel better after an hour. Do not overfeed them before visiting a vet though, just in case it has a physical blockage, or needs an operation.

When you get to a vet they should check the front and back teeth, the throat area, feel its stomach and guts for lumps and gas, and if it is a male, check if it is impacted. If the animal has been neutered in the last 6 months, then it could be something related to that, such as a guinea pig hernia. It is also a good idea to ask the vet for an x-ray. Just a top-down one is good enough, for side-on they need to make the animal drowsy. Always ask for a copy of the x-ray so that you can get a second opinion.

If the animal’s teeth are fine, and it is not impacted, then the problem is either somewhere in the middle, the animal is in pain for some reason, or it has an infection. You will find that not all vets can diagnose a problem, but if nothing physical can be found, such a as a blockage, then make sure you get the following meds before leaving: antibiotics to treat an infection, probiotics to help put good bacteria in the gut that the antibiotics kill, painkiller injection, critical care mix and a 5ml and a 1ml syringe for giving meds, food and drink. If the animal has not been pooping, then emeprid can help to get the guts moving.

If the vet you see is not an exotic pet specialist, and they have not discovered the problem, then get a second opinion from another vet that is a specialist.

Guinea pigs can go off food for a number of medical reasons, but they may also stop eating due to other causes. If a new guinea pig has been introduced, it can upset another guinea pig and the result is it will stop eating. This can happen when the new guinea pig is taking on the dominant one. They can also go off food after the death of another pig. Make sure that you give the vet as much information as possible.

Intervening quickly with syringe feeding can save a guinea pig life. Each feed should be a minimum of 10ml, every 2-4 hours, if you can get 20ml in then every 4-5 hours. If you need to feed in the middle of the night, then do so, missing a feed may see your pet go into decline. An ill guinea pig is serious, especially if it is not eating, so take it to a vet as soon as possible. If the local vet is closed for whatever reason, such as it is late at night, find one that is open, do not leave the animal suffering overnight. If it has something like bloat, it is unlikely to make it till the morning.

The quicker a guinea pig receives treatment, the better its long term outlook.

How Should I Get around the City?

<!--adsense-->

There’s nothing quite like having your own car to get you from point A to point B. It’s a simple matter of hopping into the driver’s seat, and away you go, not really something everybody thinks about and is often taken for granted. The only problem seems to be that even the most economical, fuel-efficient commercial vehicles on the road still seem to rack up expenses in a hurry. Even worse, if you are a city dweller then you know all about the hassles of rush-hour traffic in dealing with parking spaces, which are difficult to find and expensive to hold. The younger generation is finding less value in owning a vehicle and is quickly taking advantage of <a title=”public transportation ” href=”http://www.stminibushire.co.uk/”>public transportation </a> in order to get around while saving money.

Certainly the most popular choice for getting around the city would be to take the city bus. Though it is often attached to the negative stigma due to the misplaced notion that people who ride the bus are poor, many cities continue to improve their bus systems by implementing more efficient fuel systems, utilising GPS technology for better route monitoring and hiring more experienced drivers. The result has been a shift to a wider range of passengers in terms of all demographics. If you happen to know the routes in your area, why not save a little money and take the bus?

Taxi service is not changed much over the past several decades; however, it hasn’t much needed to. Studies indicate that most passengers believe that cab fares are still relatively moderate. If you need to get somewhere, and the buses aren’t running or you are in a particular hurry, you can still get a good value on taxi service in most cities.

Another option that is sometimes available depending on where you are and where you’re going is the commuter train or the Tube. Many people consider this to be a somewhat faster alternative to the bus system, especially when you have to travel a long distance and want to make few stops. In terms of speed and cost efficiency based on distance travelled, this is certainly the best option. Of course, your destinations and departure times are also the most limited. London has one of the better underground subway networks in the world, so if you want a reliable way to get to work, visit family or just travel across town, catch a ride on the Tube underground rail network.

What Are The Philippine Languages?

<!--adsense-->

As an archipelago consisting of 7,107 islands, the Philippines is considered diverse in terms of spoken languages. Its diversity was due to the pre-historic events, the topographical situation and the colonization of different foreign countries. Along with the culture acquisition, through the years, many cultural groups developed their own languages. There are 185 distinct languages in the Philippines identified by Ethnologue; however, some are no longer spoken. Here are the lists of widely used languages as being categorized according to its function.

National and official languages. Filipino and English are constitutionally designated as the national and official languages of the Philippines. Filipino is the formal name of Tagalog. It is called Filipino when it is used to differentiate languages of another country, whereas in differentiating languages within the country it is called Tagalog. Filipino is the official language in education, broadcast media and cinema. It is widely used as the first language by over one-third of the Philippine population, spoken and written in Manila as the capital city of the Philippines. As the second language, English is used also in education, government, religion, and economy.

Regional Languages. The major languages of the northern region are Ilokano, Tagalog, Kapampanganang Pangasinan languages which are located in the northern and central Luzon. The largest group of central languages is the Bicol and Visayan Languages which are composed of Cebuano, Hiligaynon, and Waray. While the southern languages include Maranao and Subanon which are concentrated in Mindanao. Through time major languages are being broken down into various indigenous languages which are called dialect (native to a particular place or ethnic group).

Major Foreign Languages. Philippines is an open country for trade and business, education and tourism. Many foreign individual lived here permanently, making this country known as having the most hospitable people. Through this reason foreign languages developed and still continue to spread. In fact, there are some schools taught foreign languages. Mandarin Chinese is the medium instruction in Chinese schools. Arabic is used by some Filipino Muslim in both liturgical and instructional since the arrival of Islam. There are some Japanese descendants makes their language active until now. Malay/Indonesian is spoken in the southernmost part of the county. Spanish still exists, but not widely used.

Regardless of the differences in languages, What’s important is the unity of the people to achieve a common goal for the goodness of the country.

Can A Guinea Pig Eat Too Much Food?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhRTzZFO_-Y

We all know that all guinea pigs do all day and night is eat and sleep, but can a guinea pig eat too much food? If you search for the question online, a few sites will tell you not to overfeed them. However, if you think about that answer, it would mean that you would have to sit and watch your pet for twenty four hours a day to watch what they are eating.

Guinea pig stomachs behave similar to those of humans. They give a signal to the brain when they are hungry, and another saying that they are full. When they get the latter one, they stop eating and go to sleep. Guinea pigs have a very fast digestive system, so even after a full belly and a couple of hours sleep, they will likely wake up hungry again.

So, if you put a big pile of fresh grass in front of a guinea pig, they can eat all they like. They will not get to a point where they are likely to explode. They know when they have had enough, and stop eating. Although you can give them a lot of hay and grass, you need to ensure that the overall diet is balanced. It is important that they get a mix of hay, grass, fresh fruit and veg, and pellets. Hay and pellets should always be available to them, but it is also safe to give them a good supply of cucumber, as they can use it to quench their thirst.

A guinea pig who eats a well balanced diet will stay healthy, but it is always a good idea to check the poo on a daily basis as this is a good indicator of how their digestive system is working. If you have introduced a new food and their poor changes, then reduce the amount of the new food you have given them until the digestive system returns to normal. Guinea pig poo is a great indicator of many internal problems, and things such as diarrhoea should always be treated by a vet.

So feed you guinea pig whatever he or she wants to eat, but make sure that it includes all of the vitamins, minerals and fibre that they need on a daily basis.

Nutritional Diet: Fruits And Veg For Rabbits And Guinea Pigs

Rabbits and guinea pigs need a constant source of energy in order to survive. Proper nutrition is the key component of healthy growth and development of these pets. This includes vegetables, which should make up 20-30% of their diet. This translates to a loosely packed container per day on average for a rabbit or guinea pig. The other 70-80% should be different types of pellets and hay, such as Timothy (green and brown), Readigras, and Meadow. You should gradually feed any new food for your pet, however it is best to have a consistent diet preferred by your pet’s appetite.

These are the foods that cans be fed in maximum amounts: Fresh grass (chemical free and no wild rabbits have been grazing on it, or cat or dogs on it), celery, carrot tops (the green bit), kale, watercress, Asian greens (bok choy, choy sum), parsley (great source of vitamin C), coriander, dandelion and chicory leaves, milk thistle and mint and other herbs.

Things like broccoli (a great source of vitamin C), cabbage leaves and cauliflower leaves should be taken in a moderate amount. No more than one leaf a day as they can contribute to the large amounts of gas in the intestine resulting in pain and loss of appetite.

The following are foods that should be taken in a small amount: Red peppers (highest vitamin C concentration), green/yellow peppers, apples, pears, bananas, carrots, cucumber, grapes, oranges, strawberries and tomatoes. Maximum of ½ cup a day of total combined. If you are not feeding a pellet enriched with Vitamin C, it is necessary to feed slightly larger amounts of these fruits and veg.

Regardless of the amounts of food being fed to your pet what is more important is a balanced nutritional diet. Take into consideration feeding pellets and mixes. Make sure that these foods are in high quality in terms of nutritional value. Many commercial pellets and mixes are very high in protein, fats and sugar. If this is your pet’s main source of food, they will most likely end up weak, overweight and prone to develop illnesses. A limit of 1-2 tablespoons of good quality is enough to supplement a balanced diet. A diet high in pellets and mixes can cause a high risk of urinary problems, gastrointestinal problems and dental disease.

Note that these are the food that you should never feed to your bunnies and guinea pigs: Bird treats, cheese. chocolates, caffeine-containing products, cookies/bread, corn kernel/popcorn, dairy products, iceberg lettuce, ice cream, meat of fish, onions, garlic, sweet potatoes, rhubarb, tomato plants, any processed foods, anything spicy, anything with cinnamon, sugary foods, alcohol and human or other species medications.

The ideal diet is 80% hay and 20% fresh veggies, with a little fruit as a treat. Keeping a nutritional balance diet for your pet means you love and care for them. Varying it a little each day, will stop them getting bored. Remember, the main diet has to be fiber to keep their digestive system working properly. This is why it is important to ensure that pellets and hay are always available.

Why Is My Guinea Pigs Stomach Making Gurgling Noises?

We all lover our guinea pigs, and most people notice any changes straight away in their health and behaviour. A guinea pig digestive system works just like any other mammals. Whenever any animal eats, the food moves to the stomach and there it is processed. Well, basic processing starts with the enzymes and bacteria in saliva, but the main breakdown of food is done in the stomach.

Once food is in the stomach, it is mixed with acid, bacteria and enzymes which all work to break the food into its basic parts, such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats. It is this process which causes gases like methane to be released. This bubbling of gas makes gurgling noises, and sometimes it can be heard in humans, either after a fizzy drink, a meal, and even when hungry. So does this answer the question why is my guinea pig’s stomach making gurgling noises? In one respect, yes, that is what causes the majority of gurgling noises.

However, another cause is that everything that eats, will always swallow air. Humans do this when they eat food and drink, it is especially noticeable after a fizzy drink. The thing with humans is that we can sense gas in our stomach and burp, but guinea pigs do not have the stomach reflex to do that. So any gas produced or swallowed by a guinea pig needs to pass through the complete digestive system, and pass out of its bottom as wind. Some guinea pig farts can be heard, while others may smell, although it depends on what they have eaten.

There are other reasons as well, but they are rare. These are usually always due to a problem with the digestive system such as bloat. Sometimes loud gurgling can be the first sign of a potential blockage. When this happens, the sound of gurgling is usually very audible. It can be a sign of a hernia, or tightening of the intestine somewhere. If not found and operated on, these conditions can lead to guinea pig boat, and quickly result in the animals death. The problem with these rare conditions is that the animal can have a loud gurgling stomach, but be eating, pooping, and acting normal for a few weeks before the real trouble sets in.

Please be aware that if you have a neutered guinea pig, especially if the operation was done within the last six months, then it is possible the gurgling noise is a sign of a hernia. This happens when some part of the intestine passes through the hole left where the testicle tubes were removed. Although very rare, unless operated on, the guinea pig will die from bloat. Sometimes some food can pass through for months before it gets serious. So if you have a guinea pig that has been neutered, and its stomach is gurgling a lot, it could have a hernia down where its testicles used to be.

So, the best advice if you notice changes in the sound of your guinea pig’s stomach, is to take it to an exotic pet specialist. If the condition it has is rare, your local vet is very unlikely to figure out what it is. Yes, an exotic vet will charge more, but isn’t it worth the extra money to keep your pet healthy? Digestive problems in guinea pigs can kill, and it is always very important to get the best advice.

Timmy
This article is written in memory of our beautiful guinea pig Timmy, who died from the type of hernia mentioned above. He suffered bloat on and off for 3 months, and we kept him alive with intensive care during that period. We had seen 6 vets in that period, but no-one picked up on the problem. It was only when his condition was really serious, and he was on death’s door that we found a very good exotic vet. Although she only discovered the problem by operating. Although she tried to repair the damage, the damage to Timmy’s intestines was too much after 3 months of problems, and he passed away the following day. We had adopted him from the RSPCA, only had him 4 months, and he just made his first birthday.

What To Consider When Making The Decision To Neuter Your Guinea Pigs?

“Is it good to neuter my guinea pig?” A question frequently asked by most guinea pig owners. The answers vary from different perspectives. Talking about the pet’s health, we need to consider how important the procedure, and will it affect the growth and development of the guinea pig. Is the surgery beneficial and safe? Does it contribute to the wellness of the guinea pig? Some of the online communities tackle this topic and their answers vary depending on the respondents.

Pet overpopulation is said to be the reason why there are animals that need to be neutered. Like all other animals, guinea pigs are also subjected to population control. Most of the time, rescue centers operate at full capacity, having many guinea pigs with them. These rescue centers are burdened with dozens of guinea pigs, which fill up quickly, especially when feral guinea pigs are brought in, with many of them pregnant. For this reason, many rescue centers advocate neutering and spaying all guinea pigs.

Health issues are another important concern. Mammary cancer in male guinea pigs does sometimes develop, but there is no evidence to support that neutering will prevent this from occurring. Neutering males have no proven health benefits, although it may have an effect on the animal hygiene. Owners are advised to check the perineal sac occasionally and clean out any debris with Q-tips and mineral oil. Thus neutering makes the sac more likely to collect debris, although this is rare.

Another thing to consider is the behavioral problems that result from an excessive secretion of hormones. The consensus among guinea pig experts is that neutering does not affect territorial herd behavior among males. Instead, it affects the guinea pig’s social dynamics. Thus, some owners observed that guinea pigs are calmer with people after being neutered. Animals with distinct social hierarchies may exhibit aggressive behavior, especially if more than one dominant guinea pig is in the group. Neutering is unlikely to affect this behaviour.

Given proper nutrition, enough space and appropriate companion, the majority of male guinea pigs can live in a cage with another male. In terms of choosing a companion for the neutered guinea pig, a pair of two adult males, is muc better than an adult with a baby male.  Adolescents exhibit more hormonal behavior than adults, so therefore two in the same cage is not a good idea.

Don’t consider opposite sex companion when neutering has not taken place. If that happens accidentally, then the only option is to let the guinea pig live alone or get them each a same sex companion. In this case, neutering is not necessary, but it would be beneficial to the pet and the owner. The safety of the procedure depends on the expertise of the veterinarian and the proper post-operative care provided by knowledgeable owner.

In finding good veterinarians, you must first seek recommendations from rescues or online communities for a recommended vet list. Choose the veterinarian who has successfully undergone various surgeries on neutering guinea pigs can that can provide you with two crucial post –operative tools, namely; antibiotics and pain medicine.

Using a skilled veterinarian, there will be a high rate of a success with the surgery. And with appropriate antibiotics and pain medicine, along with a knowledgeable pet owner who can provide proper post-operative care surgical, complications are unlikely to occur. Before taking your guinea pig in for surgery, consider first the post-operation care guide that you can read at online communities. Just search on Google to find these.

In rare cases, severe complications like hernia, infection, adhesions, and bloat may occur. Guinea pig owners should be extremely vigilant when caring for guinea pig that has been neutered. Veterinarians perform either scrotal neuter with two incisions in the scrotal sac or pre-scrotal neuter with single incision above the scrotal sac.

A few rescuers choose veterinarians with the best post-operative care to achieve fewer incidents on male guinea pigs. Some veterinarians will recommend spaying all female guinea pigs for health purposes, but few advocate this as it is safer to neuter males. In the past, guinea pigs owners decided to neuter their pets just for their own convenience. Since there are a lot of factors to be considered, it should be undertaken only after plenty of research has been carried out, and there is no other option.
